Meantime
This summer the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco presents the second iteration of Meantime — an ongoing series of pop-ups, performances, artist residencies, and workshops taking place in advance of our fall exhibitions.
During our inaugural Meantime program in winter 2022, we consistently heard from participants that access to space was critical. In the spirit of reciprocity and collaboration, we are dedicated to providing space and support to a variety of communities in the Bay Area in the hope of fostering lasting partnerships.

We encourage you to engage with the artists working in the space, learn about their practice, and get involved in the making of the work. A full Meantime event schedule is available at the front desk and on our website.
Our fall exhibitions will open to the public on September 23, 2023, with two solo shows by Rupy C. Tut and Patrick Martinez.

This year, we expanded the Meantime program to include artist residencies. The artists here are using the museum as a studio space, making new work, and providing interactive opportunities for visitors.
Carolina Cuevas will be working on creating large textile pieces made of cotton string and clay, continuing her exploration on language and altar-making through material studies and textile techniques.
Dance Doyle's textiles are on view, welcoming folks to engage with the work, see demonstrations, and for special dates, weave with yarn and mixed-media on their own provided boards.
Heesoo Kwon x Karen Cheung: Leymusoom 품앗이 (pum-as-i) This collaborative initiative takes on the meaning and tradition of 품앗이 (pum-as-i), which loosely translates to acts of labor based on reciprocity. During the residency, collaborators will generate new artwork and writings around Leymusoom, an autobiographical feminist religion Kwon initiated in 2017 as a form of personal resistance against misogyny and an ever-evolving framework for investigating her family histories.
New Monuments Task Force | Cheyenne Concepcion, Anna Lisa Escobedo and Claire Flanegin will initiate a new research-based participatory artwork that spotlights learnings from various “stakeholders” taking part in San Francisco’s public art infrastructure. Engaging in dialogue with public artists, developers, municipal representatives and culture organizations they will trace how these disparate stories align and collide.
Palm Assembly continues their participatory photo booth project INVASIVE FANTASY with an immersive installation and open photo booth hours, inviting the public to join their conversation about palm trees.
Tanja Geis is making work for For-Site’s Guardhouse Program at Fort Mason in San Francisco, creating an immersive installation that explores a speculative future in which sea levels have risen.
On view during Meantime is a local designer highlight presented with Modern Appealing Clothing (MAC). Custom garments on view by Lemon Twist, Benji Mu, and Camelia Skikos were created in collaboration with painter Florencia Montefalcone.
This collaboration is accompanied by a limited-edition tote bag and a series of participatory workshops.
